Outside of talking about it with colleagues, I’ve never heard “teacher insomnia” widely discussed in the zeitgeist. But I know that for many of us elementary and high school teachers, the adrenaline, frustration, joy and exasperation and hard work associated with our profession often leads to sleepless nights and chronic insomnia.
For years I tried everything, including sleeping aides such as Ativan to help me turn off the merry-go-round of ideas and worries that would keep me up until dawn. The problem with Ativan is that it left me feeling groggy, disoriented and short tempered the next day. In a classroom full of two dozen 10-year olds, this was simply not acceptable.
And then a friend of mine told me she used cannabis to fall asleep at night.
As a child of the 70s, I used my fair share of marijuana as a teenager, but stopped in adulthood. Also, marijuana had never put me to sleep, but rather made me giggly and hungry. However, my friend had her medical marijuana license and told me she was getting strains that were so high in THC that all she needed to do was take a few puffs on her vape before bed before falling asleep in no time.
I followed her lead and got licensed with a company called Plants Not Pills. The extremely helpful staff there recommended I try D.S. & FITZ’s Blueberry Estate. All it took was three puffs of my vape and I was down for the count. I slept through the night and the next morning felt better than I had in years.
It’s been over a year and I’m still vaping Blueberry Estate for bed. It’s become part of my nightly ritual. I’ve noticed my energy level has gone up and most importantly, I’m able to give 100% of myself to my class.
